Sunrise Seascape


Ring in the new year, light and carefree,

with early morning hike, binoculars in hand,

to catch first day sunrise at Makapu’u Head.



See stunning views of O’ahu’s windward

coast, turquoise sea below, offshore islets,

and red-roofed Makapu’u Lighthouse.



Binoculars, viewing scope and interpretive

sign along the trail help identify Hawaiian

seabirds and spot migrating humpback whales.



Capturing the first day sunrise in a tropical

paradise is like a love affair —

so beautiful that it couldn’t last.



But even the briefest of

moments last a lifetime.

Katacha Díaz is a Peruvian American writer. Wanderlust and love of travel have taken her all over the world to gather material for her stories. She earned her BA and MPA from the University of Washington. She was a research associate at the University of California, Davis. Among the children’s books she has authored is Badger at Sandy Ridge Road for the Smithsonian Institution’s Backyard series.
