1 Poem by Alizah Teitelbaum

Song of an Aging Bassoonist 3

Sourdough starters.
Never seen powers
Stay home and shiver in winter for hours.
This aging bassoonist
Perfectionist she
Of peculiar persisting proficiency

She seldomly sounds,
Cautiously counts and frequently frowns
Banging out notes in an orchestral score
Tapping out time with one foot on the floor
She makes headway with harmonies
But then sourdough starters
Bubble like beers in pickling jars
And on a count of four
The frowning bassoonist is blowing
Some passionate notes on her orchestral score
But she can’t blow anymore
Before spooning some salt in the water and flour.
