1 Poem by Adreyo Sen

Romeo and Juliet

Yesterday I was watching
Romeo must die
Needless to say, I survived
The ordeal punctuated
By bad music.

But a part of me much given
To unproductive cogitation
And counting of stars and
Raindrops
Wondered, what if Romeo and Juliet
Survived
And came together?

I guess
Unable to cope with married boredom
Living in poverty beyond the pale
And hated by their families
Romeo discovering Juliet’s fondness
For a little bit of gin
While disgusting her with his own
Loss of muscle to flab
Would find themselves no longer
Brought to climax
By their essential difference
The lawlessness so hyped
Of their romance.

If enlightened, they’d call it quits
Divorce each other, no big deal
Divide the almost-nil assets with some
Acrimony and move on
If not, one would kill the other
With passionate violence
And emigrate to Australia
Or do life in an institution
Where inmates do Shakespeare
For their GED.
