The Abandoned Home
Inside, the door creaks on its hinges,
answering to faint breezes as its
once bright paint fades like peeling
wallpaper. From above, winding
branches and overgrown fern paint
decay with pine green leaves. When
looking up, insects see moss climbing
its dirt-covered brick walls, snaking
between window cracks. From afar,
it shrinks against the hills, swallowed
by vines. If its walls could speak, they’d
mutter the names of those whose laughter
used to echo within, their voices a song
now silenced. Years ago, its bricks glowed
a vibrant red, its windows clear, releasing
light from within. Joy once radiated from
full dinner tables and harmonious voices.
