TO BUILD A WALL
There was a dry summer silencethe other side of the wall.
The stone there was quarried
from the hollow of measureless time
to build a wall, a farm, a village
where nothing is for ever.
The world was moving
when the rocks went down,
returning with the motions of the earth,
breathing sighs of remembrance
for another world to be found
in stone’s frail consciousness.
