A Protection of Petals
(after a painting of a closed rose by Hwang Hyunjin)
Lights play across a stage,
seemingly random until they settle
and a pattern emerges.
The pinks are upright closing
around the centre
from which they grew,
a tight, familiar formation.
There's a pastel wash, rain,
persistent, rhythmic,
a bass/drum combination
at odds with the delicate
movement of petals.
The tight flower holds
and guards the melody.
