2 Poems by David Francis

Drops Falling After a Downpour

Stick my head
out the window
from our hotel room
into the alley
so dark
with a bad smell
and feel
the drops falling
catch one
in my hand
one on
my eyelid
am I
catching
the present

From Empire Diner

Looking up –
there is an anchor-shaped cross
that is a man
arms outstretched on the railing
only the white undershirt
gleams like spot-lit billboard cloth
(the face is obscure

from time to time
disappears and reappears)

and all the ventilation
under the umbrellas
won’t air the claustrophobia
in that room.
