1 Poem by Kevin Browne

Evenings

In the evenings when it’s not raining
the air is soft but still always humid
and the street quiet except for an occasional
motorcycle or food pushcart
selling ice cream or meatball soup
or an itinerant salesman of household goods.

There is a peacefulness that contrasts
with the noise and heat of the day, and
the chickens have gone in for the night
and I listen for the liquid sound of the
xylophones from the neighborhood gamelan
drifting unhurriedly on the night air.
