Spiral 2

As I expand
I condense; and

While I live, I’m
Dying, in time.

An arrow rives
My soul, or heart

Right through,
And out both ends:

One way, toward forever;
The other, into me—

And strangely,


James B. Nicola is a frequent contributor to Poetry Pacific and the author of seven collections of poetry, the latest being Fires of Heaven (2021) and Turns & Twists (2022). His nonfiction book Playing the Audience won a Choice magazine award.
